I just got off the phone with a friend who is slicing as well. We have been in and out of each others' lives for nearly 8 years.
It was the summer of 2010 when we met at JOSTI, a technology conference sponsored by the US State Department. K was a vibrant soul with lots of sparks flying just the kind of person, I need to be around at conferences to bounce ideas off of and talk through things with.
Tonight, was a breath of fresh air. K and I have met in person once, but we chatted like old friends who had to process so many life happenings: new jobs, new places, new family members. Facebook may be the root of all evil in some cases but in this particular case, it is a diamond in the rough.
K with her years of experience on me as a mom, reminded me that it gets better and that everything I am experiencing is normal and will be laughable in ways in the future. As she moves onto a new career similar to mine, I shared my recent experiences with her, humbled by hearing my own voice and realizing how much I have grown and learned.
With friends, near or far, old or new, we are better together. K, I hope the next chat can be in person over a beer or big glass of wine, in a great place.

Friendships come in so many shapes and forms. This sounds like a special kind of friendship, one that allows you to feel good when exiting Facebook. Glad you're able to connect with your far away friend and have such positive influences on each other's lives.
ReplyDeleteThis is encouraging. I have a few friendships that are similar and also some old friendships that I really only keep in touch via Facebook. With all of the current issues with security and Facebook tracking, I've been trying to decide if I should let it go. Your post reminds me of the good side to social media.
ReplyDeleteI have made some very real friendships almost entirely based on social media. It is a different way to get to know people, but real shines through. I love that distance does not need to keep great minds apart!
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean about FB being two-sided. But, as a someone who's moved a lot, it has been more of a blessing to me, too. I've stayed in contact with ppl who would just be memories at this point in my life! It's amazing to me how small it makes the world feel. :)
ReplyDeleteIs that an invitation to purchase a plane ticket to South America? ;)
